Splash Student Registration and Information

Full Student Registration is now open and will remain open until 8pm (eastern time) on November 13.

For information about Splash, look here.

We apologize for the broken queue on the first night of registration and for the delay in opening full registration. We feel that this deserves some sort of explanation so here goes:

Last year, when Splash registration opened, our server immediately crashed. There were simply too many people trying to access our website (far more than we ever dreamed possible) all at once and our server could not handle the load. Over the past year we have endlessly brainstormed a way to keep our server from crashing when Splash registration opens. One obvious option is to buy several new servers to handle the extra load, but as we are a nonprofit student group, this in not in our budget range. We considered several options, including opening registration at an unannounced time and making all registration work by a random lottery. In the end we decided to open registration such that students could only register for one class on the first day and then be able to register for as many more classes as they wished on all subsequent days, in hopes that this would spread the load on our server over several days. We also decided to implement a queue system so that only a certain number of people could access our website at any given time, thus also cutting down on server load. These changes involved a restructuring of the back-end of our website, which our dedicated (all-volunteer) web administration team spent many sleepless nights on.

The day before registration opened, we rigorously tested every aspect of our registration system, including loading our server with over 150 simultaneous users. Any bugs that came up were promptly fixed, the queue was operational, and our server had no problems with the load. We had every reason to believe that we were ready for registration the next day. At 8pm, when single-class registration opened, our website was immediately bombarded with almost 2,000 users, all trying to register or browse the catalog at once. While our server did not crash per se, it was certainly very unhappy, and it expressed its rage by kicking people out of the queue and showing anyone who was trying to register various errors which we had never seen before. The following morning, we desperately searched for a newer, much-faster server which we could temporarily borrow for the opening of full registration, and around 6:30pm we finally managed to find one. Unfortunately, it took roughly three hours to retrieve this server, set it up, and transfer our database and website to it, accounting for the delay in the opening of full registration.

Again, our deepest apologies for the trouble.

registration

Hey, I apparently only got confirmed for the class I signed up for on 10/31, but I confirmed registration and can print out the reciept and liability forms. Is there any way I could get into the classes I have on the schedule but do not show up on official registration?

Confirmation of Registration

Hi everyone. Our website will NOT send out a confirmation email when you register. You can know you're registered if you're able to see your receipt (there'll be a link to it at the bottom of the student registration page). Make sure you've updated your profile or you won't be able to confirm your registration! As for paying for the program, you can either pay online by following the credit card payment link, or bring a check made out to "MIT ESP" with you to Splash check-in.

Sierra's registration

My daughter registered for SPLASH and it said her registration was confirmed but we did not receive any confirmation number or email. How do I know she is registered and pay for the classes? Thanks, Ruth Labbe

can't register siblings at the same time

Because you require each student to have own account, it's impossible to register siblings at the same time. Only one can be at the computer , and register, wile the other can only look on how all the desired classes are filling up. When it's already a hassle to even get in front of the queue, having one child who can't even get into the queue because the other is already in it, is even worse. With two fighting teenagers, we didn't have a peaceful evening yesterday.

S640: Diseases of the Nervous System

There was an error with this class earlier. It was not scheduled for a time slot and students were not able to select it. This error has now been fixed and the class is scheduled for Sun 3:00pm--5:00pm. If you've tried to register for it and failed, please try again now.

RED MESSAGES

The message This programm cannot accept any more students! Please try again in its next session. appears in red after EVERY single class, even though it shows plenty of available class slots.

Sunday Classes

If you're not able to register for any Sunday classes, we know of this error and are working to fix it.

Solution

I just called they said that they are working on it, just refresh the page after five minutes if you cannot register for any of the classes and if it still does not work then wait another 5 minutes.

Just another note. We'll gladly answer any email you send us (esp@mit.edu) or talk to you on the phone (617-253-4882), but we won't be checking the comments page anymore tonight. So if you're having a problem, email or call us! Here is a common problem: * If a class you want to take doesn't show up, there are two possible reasons: either the class is full or you're not in the grade range to take the class. Our regular catalog does not update as fast as the the catalog used for registering so even if the catalog says there's still room in a class, it may have filled up. Please check your profile to make sure you are in the correct grade range to take the class. If there's still a problem, email or call us.

not disappearing, just full

Ah, now I see. The classes still appear in the full course catalog but they are indeed full now (which explains why they no longer show up in the list for registration). Drats!

Comment by Jacob Aki — 11/01/2007, 07:09 p.m.

disappearing classes?

Classes that were listed this morning are now missing. Can't find H676 (mystery engineering) or H659 (Magic 101 Card Tricks) when I look at the selection for specific time blocks. Does this mean the classes have been dropped or are aleady full?

Note from admins

Hey everyone. As a note to all the people who have posted their class requests here: we can't manually register you for classes. You'll have to follow the link at the top of the page register yourself.
