This information applies to Splash 2012. Check back closer to late August 2013 for updated information about this year’s Splash.
Times
Splash 2012 will happen on Saturday, November 17, 2012 and Sunday November 18, 2012. Splash classes will run from 10 am – 10 pm on Saturday, and 9 am – 7 pm on Sunday, with a break for dinner from 6 pm – 7 pm on Saturday. All classes start 5 minutes after the hour and end 5 minutes before (like MIT classes).
Places
Splash is on the MIT campus. In particular, most of our classrooms are just off the Infinite Corridor in buildings 1, 2, 4, 5, 26, 56, and the Student Center. If you are unfamiliar with MIT, a map is viewable at http://whereis.mit.edu. Teacher check-in is in the teacher lounge, where you must check in with us at least 30 minutes before your first class, which is the Bush Room, 10-105. You can check your classroom assignment and time at http://esp.mit.edu/teach/Splash/2012/teacherreg/.
Teacher Check-In
All teachers must check-in 30 minutes before their first class in the Bush Room (10-105). The Teacher Lounge is located in the Bush Room (10-105). Come here to meet and hang out with other teachers and for juice, snacks, and teacher lunches and dinner.
Numbers that must be in your phone
Splash security hotline: (617) 253-4941 Use this for any Splash issues such as a locked room or a malfunctioning projector.
MIT Police: (617) 253-1212 Use this for a major issue such as a fire or medical emergency. If you call MIT Police, please call Splash security afterwards so we are kept informed.
Walk-in Activities
Walk-in activities are a special type of ongoing class held in Lobby 13 throughout Splash. Students can come by walk-ins and participate at any time, without having registered in advance.
Class Introductions
At the beginning of every class, as you introduce yourself, please tell your students that they are welcome to leave the class at any time if they don’t find it interesting. They can attend a walk-in activity in Lobby 13, or change their schedules in 4-163. We believe that Splash succeeds only when students and teachers are equally engaged and excited about the class. Similarly, if a student is on your roster but is not in the class, do not worry -- they may have changed classes, or decided to go to walk-in seminars.
Emailing your class
You may want to contact your class before Splash, to introduce yourself and get them excited for your class, or after Splash to give them follow-up material. You can do this by emailing your class list. If your class code is X1234, your class email list is X1234-students@esp.mit.edu. You also have a list with the teachers of your class on it. This list would be X1234-teachers@esp.mit.edu in the example above. Splash directors are on both of these lists.
Reimbursements
To receive reimbursement for items you purchase for your classes, you must submit an itemized receipt with proof of purchase. If your purchase is non-consumable, you will not be reimbursed until you have given the item(s) to ESP for use in other classes. Note that receipts will only be accepted until December 10 (three weeks after Splash), and we very strongly recommend turning them in during teacher check-in. For more information, including more detailed reimbursement instructions, see http://esp.mit.edu/teach/Splash/reimbursements.html.
Other Ways to Help Out:
Morning Check-in and Security
As well as teachers, Splash relies on volunteers for morning check-in and security. On Saturday morning, approximately 3000 Splash students will need to check in between 8 and 10 am. We can make this happen, but it takes lots of people. Similarly, throughout the weekend, Security volunteers check on classes, help lost students, watch out for trouble, and are otherwise essential to making Splash run smoothly. To volunteer for either of these roles, see the sign-up sheet at this meeting, or go to http://esp.mit.edu/volunteer/security.html.
Substitute Teaching
Splash is also looking for teachers to volunteer to act as substitutes for classes whose teachers are at the last minute no longer able to attend Splash. Sign up here at teacher training or at http://esp.mit.edu/teach/Splash/2012/substitute.html.
