Picture of Yalu Wu

Brief Biographical Sketch:

Yalu is an alum of MIT who is very involved with the Educational Studies Program. At MIT, she studied Management Science (concentrating in Operations Research) and Economics.

Yalu used to be Secretary of the Educational Studies Program, so you should ask her about ESP-related questions. She really likes to teach and thinks that spending her Saturdays with students is much better than finishing Problem Sets (homework).

She has been playing the piano for 10 years, and needs to find more time to practice. She likes chamber music and piano accompanying.

A6650: Opera for Beginners in Splash! 2012 (Nov. 17 - 18, 2012)
Do you like music? Do you like plays or musicals? Are you interested in learning about Opera? Well you are in luck, and no previous experience is required here!! In this class, we will go over the basics of Western Opera. We will talk about and listen to some clips from famous operas starting from the 1600s until the 1950s. We will learn about Operatic style and talk about what the terms libretto, aria, and recitative mean. We will cover the Operas of the works of Gluck, Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, and more!

A6653: Music Theory in Splash! 2012 (Nov. 17 - 18, 2012)
Already know how to read music? This class will teach you the theory you need to back your skills and give you a more intuitive sense of music. We're not guaranteeing perfect pitch, but at least you'll be able to hear all the perfect fifths in any superhero's theme song. We will cover degrees, intervals, triads, and their respective qualities. We will also cover scales, major and the three types of minor, and be introduced to modes (Ionic, Dorian, Phrygian, etc). Ear training will be emphasized for intervals and scales. We'll also cover some of the more miscellaneous topics, such as trills, mordents, pedaling, what it means for a stringed instrument to play pizz or arco, and whatever you wish to know. If some of the words here are foreign to you, you should definitely come and find out!

X4228: The Developing World Through Maps in Splash! 2010 (Nov. 20 - 21, 2010)
Join this class to learn more about the rest of the world! We will cover issues affecting the developing world such as GDP, gender equality, literacy, and sustainability through the examination of world maps and discussion (no world politics discussions). This class will also discuss indices such as the Human Development index and the Millennium Development Goals. No prior knowledge on the topics is assumed. An eagerness to learn and participate in discussion is desirable.

H3218: Introduction to Mandarin Chinese in Spark! 2010 (Mar. 13, 2010)
你好! Have you ever wondered how to order General Gau's chicken in a (Mandarin) Chinese restaurant? Does Chinese sound like gibberish to you? In this class, we will learn the very basics of Chinese. We will learn the elements of the system of writing, pronunciation systems, and basic vocabulary. If nothing else, this class should get you on your way to parsing the different sounds into a language.

M2235: Optimization Theory in Spark! Spring 2009 (Mar. 07, 2009)
Optimization is all about solving complex problems. For example, how many flavors of ice cream should your ice cream parlor carry in order to maximize profit? How would you cut a piece of yarn into four pieces to maximize the area of the quadrilateral formed? Where should you locate an emergency facility in order to minimize transportation costs? How should you drive in order to minimize gas usage? We will show you how to model real-life problems and find optimal solutions of your own!

H1558: Origami for fun! in Splash! 2008 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2008)
Come learn how to make fun stuff with paper! Things that we have done in the past are: boats, camera, flying boxes, pacman, and more! This class is for beginners. If you've done any origami before, you might be get bored. All ages are welcome.

H1559: Urban Orienteering at MIT in Splash! 2008 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2008)
So you've seen the crazy lego-like Simmons dorm and the earthquake shaken Stata Center. Do you want to get to know the MIT campus even more? Welcome to Urban Orienteering! Equipped with only a map and your sense of direction, you must race your way through all the checkpoints across over campus. Traditionally, orienteering is done in parks, on and off trail. We will be doing the same thing on the MIT campus except instead of having a compass as your guide, you will be using your surroundings to help you. And of course there will be a special something for the fastest teams!! NOTE: The course will be very similar to the ones in previous years.

H1560: Paint with Watercolor! in Splash! 2008 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2008)
Learn how to paint in Watercolors! We can paint anything you want. No prior experience necessary. Paint, brushes, board, and masking will be provided, simply bring yourself and some creativity. An image of what you would like to paint would be recommended. Also, you may want to bring a rag (to wipe off water, or to touch up your painting). In this class, we will learn some basic watercolor techniques and then do some experimentation! Also note that watercolors can be messy, so come prepared.

M1821: The Theory of Optimization I in Splash! 2008 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2008)
Familiarity with algebra is required. If you are planning on taking Theory of Optimization II, sign up for this class as well.

M1822: The Theory of Optimization II in Splash! 2008 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2008)
This course is a follow-up to The Theory of Optimization I. In this class, we will explore the mathematical basis for optimization. We will discover the rich math of Hilbert spaces, dual spaces, and Fourier analysis. We will be able to use these concepts to solve a broader class of optimization problems, such as finding the path of least time (useful in relativistic mechanics), finding the optimal strategy to play Age of Empires, and deriving the equation entropy in statistical mechanics. Some knowledge in Calculus is recommended.
