Time Commitments

“I wish I could teach, but I’m busy.”

You can still teach an ESP class! We’re excited about having as many teachers as possible for our program, even if you can’t devote your life to ESP (though some do). Remember, you can always co-teach with friends. We’ll help try to fit teaching into your schedule.

Here’s a summary of how much time it takes to be a good teacher at each of our programs:

  • Splash and Splash on Wheels: 2 hours teacher training highly recommended, 2 or more hours preparing for class, 1 or more hours teaching. This is a one-time thing (though many Splash teachers go on to teach for other ESP programs!). Total time per semester: 5 hours
  • HSSP: 2 hours teacher training and interview highly recommended, and 2 hours teaching per week for a season - plus the time needed to plan your class. Total time per semester: 30 hours
  • SAT Prep: 3 hours teaching each Sunday (plus preparation time) for a little less than the length of a semester. Total time per semester: 25 hours
  • Delve: About 4 hours teaching every Sunday, split or shared between you and your co-teacher, all year. This is an in-depth, highly rewarding program! Total time per semester: 50 hours
  • Prove It: 2 hours teaching per week for 6 weeks plus the time needed to prep your class. Total timer per semester: 15 hours

Teachers for SATPrep and Delve are paid because those programs have more of a commitment to quality teaching, exploring a complete curriculum, and helping the students succeed. HSSP, Splash, Splash on Wheels, and Prove It are a bit different: they are your chance to experiment with new subjects and new ways of teaching, and you don’t have to put quite as much time into them. Teaching at Splash is a great way to get started if you haven’t taught much before or you don’t have the time to dive into a full-semester program. Explore the catalog and Splash teacher information page to get a better idea!

Please note: if you have signed up for a class and are unable to make it either for the entire time or for one or more sessions, it is your responsibility to arrange for a substitute and/or notify the program directors as soon as possible.

Contact ESP at esp@mit.edu to let us know if you’re interested in teaching or have any questions!
