We aren’t professional teachers……and you don’t have to be one either. Besides creating the opportunities for our students, ESP is all about helping MIT people become well-prepared, creative, and insightful teachers. Thankfully, ESP has connections to some experienced educators who help us improve our teaching skills. Before each Splash and HSSP, we have a 2-hour teacher training session. Pamela Gay, who was a student of ESP years ago and is now an astrophysics professor at Harvard, gives a great presentation on how to help your students learn to the best of their ability. We also hold a discussion on what it means to be an ESP teacher and what our purpose really is for our students. The training session is helpful for anyone, especially if you’ve never taught ESP before or you’re interested in joining (and pizza is a’plenty). More importantly, there are a lot of people around ESP (undergraduate students!) who have taught a lot in the past and would love to talk to you about teaching the class of your choice. You can come to any ESP meeting or office hours, just walk in and chat. Or e-mail us with your ideas. It’s our responsibility to help you teach anything you want.
