This course is designed to give a brief introduction to the the study of codes, and the art of writing and solving them. This class will move chronologically through the history of cryptology: we will start around 500 BCE with the simple Atbash cipher and other monolphabetic substitutions, touch upon the beginnings of steganography, and work our way through the Renaissance and the "Indecipherable Cipher". The focus will be on learning the functionality of each cipher, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. There will be code-breaking in this class.
