This course is designed to give a brief introduction to the the study of codes, and the art of writing and solving them. This class will move chronologically through the history of cryptology: we will start around 500 BCE with the simple Atbash cipher and other monoalphabetic substitution. We will touch upon the beginnings of steganography (the art of hidden messages), and work our way through the Renaissance, ending with the Le Chifre Indéchiffrable. The focus will be on learning the functionality of each cipher, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. There will be code-breaking in this class.
