Brief Biographical Sketch:

Emma started at MIT as a PhD student in EAPS in 2025, deciding to serve some time on the east coast after growing up in sunny Southern California. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Geobiology from Caltech, where she discovered her love for environmental microbes. There, she worked on projects ranging from the microbial ecology of deep sea hydrothermal vent sediments to the mechanisms of greenhouse gas production from bacteria in arid desert soils. In the Bablab at MIT, she hopes to merge these interests and investigate the metabolisms involved in greenhouse gas production from microbes in low oxygen regions of the ocean. Outside of the lab, Emma can be found enjoying her first real winter (winter hiking, skiing, sledding, wild ice skating!) and staying cozy at home picking up too many expensive hobbies (knitting, baking, and finding cute plants).
