Brief Biographical Sketch:
I retired knowing more about computer science than math. Fact is I enjoy computer programming. My full time teaching positions are listed here: http://www.jazimmer.net/ZimmerTeaching.html My favorite teaching gig was the last one where I spent 10 years teaching gifted high school students. My publications are listed here: http://www.jazimmer.net/ZimmerPublications.html I intend to write more short ebooks when I'm not bicycling around the area. Past Classes(Clicking a class title will bring you to the course's section of the corresponding course catalog)C8884: Inventing Numbers in Splash 2014 (Nov. 22 - 23, 2014)
I like to think of numbers as piles of stones. As a mathematician and computer scientist I like to think of my work as inventing languages to accomplish abstract tasks. Taking the first steps in creating a number system from a pile of stones will give us chance to talk about this. Examples will be in Java because that is what is taught in high school.
