Brief Biographical Sketch:

Hi! I'm Sam. I'm an MIT freshman unsure of what exactly I want to study, but it will likely end up being a double major in math and something else. I'm originally from Natick, MA, and went to high school at Roxbury Latin. I like math, puzzles, board games, being in Boston, and laughing, and I'm sure you'll find me more interesting than this bio when you meet me! :D

Past Classes

X5692: ESPrinkler in HSSP Spring 2012 (Feb. 18, 2012)
During the last block (2:30 - 4:00), middle school students are given the opportunity to participate in ESPrinkler, a mini-program that consists of several one-shot (Splash-style) classes each week, including Singing A Capella, Explosive Chemistry, and Splendid Spleens While you don’t have to individually register for each activity, you must register for this course (ESPrinkler) to partake in the different activities offered every week!

M5694: Math for Middle School Lecture Series in HSSP Spring 2012 (Feb. 18, 2012)
Math is not about formulas and symbols: it’s about finding patterns! If three people want to all introduce themselves to each other, how many introductions will take place? Just three! But what about ten people? What about a thousand? Through interactive lectures, this class will introduce quirky mathematical topics not covered in regular curricula (number theory, graph theory, logic, set theory, geometry, etc.) The lectures are intended for middle school students. The class will consist of a lecture from a different teacher every week, on a variety of math topics accessible to middle schools students.

W5887: Schafkopf! in Spark! 2012 (Mar. 10, 2012)
Do you dream of picking up big ladies in the blind? Do you dare to pick on red death? Do you have nightmares schmearing to the partner, only to find yourself failing to make schneider, or even worse, getting schwartzed? Come play Schafkopf, a German trick-tacking card game of epic proportions — and even more epic words. We pity the mauers

M5911: Game Theory in Spark! 2012 (Mar. 10, 2012)
Come learn about how to analyze games! We'll talk about games like tic-tac-toe, nim, and chomp, and why some games are actually interesting to play, while others are over before they've even started. (Note: we'll be discussing (mostly two player) games of perfect information here, though "game theory" can encompass other things.)

W4973: Schafkopf! in Splash! 2011 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2011)
Do you dream of picking up big ladies in the blind? Do you dare to pick on red death? Do you have nightmares schmearing to the partner, only to find yourself failing to make schneider, or even worse, getting schwartzed? Come play Schafkopf, a German trick-tacking card game of epic proportions -- and even more epic words. We pity the mauers.

H5017: Introduction to Ancient Greek in Splash! 2011 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2011)
Join us as we embark on the study of ancient Greek. We'll start by getting oriented reading and writing words using the Greek alphabet (it's easier than it may seem!), then we'll dive right into basic grammar and vocabulary. Before you know it, we'll be reading excerpts straight from Plato and Homer! Bonus: we'll settle once and for all what the correct plural of "octopus" is.

X5065: Solve a Puzzle Hunt in Splash! 2011 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2011)
Do you like mental challenges? Do you want to find the answer without anyone telling you how? Then you should come solve a puzzle hunt! We will start off by introducing puzzles, and then we will work together to solve a puzzle hunt, which is a themed collection of puzzles.
