Past Classes

(Clicking a class title will bring you to the course's section of the corresponding course catalog)

H12217: Ocean Myths in Spark 2018 (Mar. 17 - 18, 2018)
Landlife emerged from water. Some of our earliest myths are of the sea - its creation, its creatures, its influence. In this class we will explore cultural context for oceans, in science, art and economy.

H11833: Learn Predicate Logic! in Splash 2017 (Nov. 18 - 19, 2017)
Are you interested in philosophy, languages, and logic? This course will cover the basics of predicate logic from a philosophical perspective. We will cover truth functionality and connectives as related to predicates, as well as a basic deduction system and some strategies. If you like philosophy of language, logic, and proofs, you'll probably like this class.

Z11316: Excavating a Shipwreck in Spark 2017 (Mar. 11 - 12, 2017)
This class will explore excavation techniques used in the excavation of intertidal shipwrecks. The wreck of the Ada K Damon, a site on which both teachers have worked, will be used as an example. Techniques being covered include trilateration, mapping, scale photography, drone usage (in theory, not practice, unfortunately), baseline usage, keeping a field notebook, and background research. The class will be as hands-on as possible! As we cannot actually go out to a site for 2 hours, shipwreck models will be provided for mapping practice.

H10975: Excavating a Shipwreck in Splash 2016 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2016)
This class will explore excavation techniques used in the excavation of intertidal shipwrecks. I will be using the wreck of the Ada K Damon as my example, which I have spent the last two summers excavating. Techniques we will be covering include trilateration, mapping, scale photography, drone usage (no real drones though :( ), baseline usage, keeping a field notebook, and background research. The class will be hands-on as possible! As we cannot actually go out to a site for 2 hours I will be providing shipwreck models for us to map. There hasn't been an archaeology class at Splash in years! So take this course while you can. Food may also be provided!
