Hey all! My name is Emmi and I am a Brain and Cognitive Sciences major here at MIT. I love discussing, learning, and teaching about public health initiatives, especially as they concern mental and maternal health. I can't wait to see you all in the class room!

Artificial intelligence is one of the most revolutionary technological innovations of our time, and is now found in everything from smart cars to Snapchat. However, what does the rise of AI mean for the world of public health? How may it be an unprecedented tool for innovation- and how may it create entirely new obstacles? In this lecture, we will cover everything from the societal implications of AI to the cutting-edge public health solutions that MIT students are developing right now.

One of the most popular social platforms of today has increasingly become a platform for health and wellness information, advice, and techniques - regardless of the lack of fact-checking mechanisms. In this lesson, we go over some of the most common misconceptions found on TikTok, and how misinformation on social media regarding our health can lead to dangerous public health repercussions.

S15567: Climate Change and the Future of Human Health in Spark 2023 (Mar. 18 - 19, 2023)
Extreme temperatures, dying crops, and global disasters have displaced millions of individuals around the world. Are the rumors true - is climate change the biggest health threat facing humanity? If so, will the societal impact be equally distributed? This course will discuss linkages between human health and the changing climate, planetary health, and how this may influence pre-existing global health disparities.


S15568: Incarcerated Rights to Healthcare in Spark 2023 (Mar. 18 - 19, 2023)
The US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Incarcerated individuals are disproportionately affected by chronic health conditions, mental illness, and substance abuse- yet they tend to receive inadequate health care before, during, and after their prison sentence. This course will discuss how these disadvantages exacerbate health disparities within the incarcerated population, and whether there is a way to find justice in the prison system.

H15254: Technology + Health Rights in Splash 2022 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2022)
Apple watches, Fitbits, step counters—we have access to a wealth of data and health tracking resources…but who else does? If your Fitbit can predict your heart rate will spike at 11:30, and Flo knows when you’re going to start your period, can advertisers better target products to you? Can law enforcement use this data as evidence in a criminal case? Could an employer use it as grounds to fire you? In this class, we’ll explore what it means for Apple, Google, and third party apps to have our biological data, both broadly and in the context of reproductive health rights.
