Brief Biographical Sketch:

Haley Bates-Tarasewicz is currently a senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology majoring in Aero/Astro Engineering and EAPS (Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences) with a minor in Writing. She is part of a variety of student groups including the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. She also enjoys spinning fire in her free time.

Her summers have included conducting research with the MIT Wallace Astrophysical Observatory and Planetary Astronomy Lab, as well as monitoring testing for the NASA TESS Mission. She has also done an internship at Northrop Grumman working on simulating exoplanet atmospheres, and at NASA JPL working on automating the process of making mars mosaics from Curiosity data.

In the past, she has taught classes on a variety of subjects for ESP including astrophysics, duct tape construction, drawing, and role playing games.

Explore the physics of the long lives and spectacular deaths of stars! Red giants, supernovas, pulsars, black holes, all of that cool stuff you've read about in science fiction novels! Class will be focused on general concepts and intuition, but may go into light derivations.


X10586: Dungeons and Dragons Tabletop RPG in Splash 2016 (Nov. 19 - 20, 2016)
You toss aside your bow and draw your sword as the slobbering beast draws closer. You slash at it as it snarls and bears down on you. You step back only to feel the cool stone wall of the cave at your back. You steel yourself and begin chanting. The air around you glows and crackles as you prepare to cast the spell. Come play a one-shot tabletop campaign! We'll be playing Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. Fight horrible monsters, explore dungeons and loot the dragons hoard!

You run terrified down an old dusty hallway as a dark being not of this world chases just behind you. You clutch a spellbook and turn to face the creature, looking into its flat yellow eyes as you yell the incantation. As the light dances from your fingertips, you just hope it'll be enough. You feel your mind slipping further and further into insanity. Come play a one-shot Tabletop campaign! We'll be playing Call of Cthulhu 6th edition. The system makes use of H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Dark mysteries and morbid secrets await!

X9512: RPG Design and Theory in HSSP Summer 2015 (Jul. 12, 2015)
CRITICAL HIT! The big bad is vanquished by the swing of your sword or your alien laser blast. In this class, we will examine the structure of tabletop RPGs, such as Dungeons & Dragons, by playing and examining the probabilistic elements, creative structures, balance, and collaborative storytelling that comprise these games. As a final project, you will use what you learned to prototype your own unique RPG, which we will test in class.

Learn the fundamentals of drawing! Find out how to break down complex forms into basic building blocks in order to accurately reproduce images. Learn to see objects in space and understand the relationships between details. Learn how to look at things and actually see them! These skills will help you become better at drawing from imagination and will help you learn to draw new things faster and more efficiently.
