Brief Biographical Sketch:
I hail from the far reaches of Michigan, where it is every bit as bloody cold as it is here. I like listening to music, making music, writing music, doing 8.012 psets (kidding) (mostly), wilderness camping, bicycling, and rock climbing and spinning poi along with all the rest of my jolly home of Tetazoo. The hair you see in my picture is sadly no longer -- I cut it all off coming to college. Have you ever been curious as to what exactly gender is? How does gender as a social construct form--is it a result of sexuality, or personality? Are sex and gender distinct, and is this distinction useful? How does gender interrelate with sex, class and ethnicity, and is it even separable from these ideas? How does the distinction between gender and sex factor into politics? What does it mean to be gender fluid? This class will be a discussion based, participant-focused seminar around the topic of gender. We will explain some basic topics centered around the ideas of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Catharine MacKinnon, and some others, and then open it up for discussion centered around the key points.
