About Michelle Chalmers, MSW

Michelle Chalmers, lives outside of Boston.
She received a BSW from Wheelock College in Boston, an MSW from San Diego State University. Michelle is the author of children’s books , “The Skin on My Chin” and “The Story of METCO.” She is a racial justice educator and facilitates difficult conversations with parents, students and teachers.

H12104: Does Race Affect Your Life? in Spark 2018 (Mar. 17 - 18, 2018)
This 2 hour class for Spark students will participate in a viewing of the powerful PBS Documentary, “Race: The Power of an Illusion, part 3.” The film focuses not on individual behaviors and attitudes, but on how our institutions shape and create race, giving different groups vastly unequal life chances. The episode reveals some of the ordinary social institutions that quietly channel wealth and opportunity, so that white people benefit from a racist system without personally being racist. It concludes by looking at why we can’t just get rid of race. Following the film, the class will engage in small and large group discussions to unpack what was learned and have questions answered.

Spark students will participate in an interactive class while watching videos, engage in activities and dialogue about economic inequality in the country and take a look at the affect and effect of race.

S9191: Becoming a Global Citizen in HSSP Spring 2015 (Feb. 21, 2015)
This class will prepare students to better understand human diversity from a personal and interpersonal perspective. Essential skills discussed will include, skin color awareness, biology of race, understanding identity and individuality, learning appropriate language around how to be inclusive with one another, looking at differences and similarities through the lens of the many areas of human diversity, history of race in America, understanding cultural patterns vs. stereotypes, discussing fairness, peace, injustice and the term “changemakers”, in the context of Civil Rights and American history. Students will explore these many important topics utilizing conversation, books, media, art, poetry and other engaging activities.
